SP Campground Review – Jekyll Island, GA

November 6, 2010 by libertatemamo 12 Comments

A lovely state park campground in the Georgia Golden Isles
Link to campground here: Jekyll Island, GA
Link to map here: Jekyll Island, GA

  1. Site Quality = 4/5
This is an island campground in a cleared-out forest area so the sites are simply flat, packed earth surrounded by trees. However the selection is great from water/electric to full hook-up as well as pull-through sites with WiFi, cable TV, picnic table, and fire-ring. This is a heavily forested area and trees can be slightly tight in spots and the sites a tad close, but access is decent and the natural environment gives the campground a very relaxing feel.
  2.  Facilities = 4/5
Very nice facilities here especially for a state park. There’s flush toilets and large showers which are a tad dated but kept spotlessly clean. The campground also has a laundry, central store, free WiFi (which works!), a cute bird sanctuary, propane and dump station.
  3. Location = 4/5
This is a very nice location. You’re right at the northern end of Jekyll Island within a minute drive to the driftwood beach and fishing pier and with direct access to the round-the-island biking trails. The Island itself has shopping and restaurants and is only ~10 miles from Brunswick. The only negative…no hiking trails or beach access directly from the campground.
  4. Pet Friendliness = 5/5
Another dog-friendly haven. Plenty of space to hang out in the campground, plus doggie-bags provided. The nearby driftwood beach is also open to dogs and completely empty most mornings.

Overall Rating = 4.25
BONUS ALERT = Lovely forested sites only a minute’s drive from the beach!

Summary: This was a wonderfully relaxing campground and we genuinely enjoyed our stay here. The campground itself is in heavy oak forest with sites on cleared-out areas. They’re very basic to look at, but have all the amenities with WiFi, cable, full hook-up and some larger pull-through’s for those that need them. Some campers are a tad tight, but the trees give separation and a relaxed natural feel. Facilities are great, spotlessly clean and there’s even a laundry on-site. The best part is that you’re only a minute’s drive (or short bike) from the fishing pier and gorgeous driftwood beach. Jekyll Island also has biking trails, restaurants and shops so you’ve got access to “civilizaton” if you want it. There’s quite a few people who spend winter here and with the great monthly rate ($475 all-included with cable, WiFi, hook-up etc.) there’s many who come back year after year.  We spent the week-end walking on the beach, chatting to the neighbours, biking the Island and enjoying the nature. We’d definitely come back.

Extra Info:  Free WiFi and cable. $32/night for back-in full hook-up (winter rate of $475/month all-inclusive). Small central store, laundry, propane and dump station on site.

Thanks so much for this information and especially the photos. It helps so much when you find a blog such as yours rather than take the old pick and hunt/hope approach.

Nina, Was just wondering if you might have a photo of site G24? Also, the empty area across the road from it. Thanks in advance for any info. Enjoy your travels. It must be quite the adventure. I’m going to save your archived post in case we ever undertake such a journey! So much great info, Laura

Ahh…sorry, don’t have a specific pic of that site. I think it’s one of the larger pull-throughs? They are all pretty nice.

I overlooked this review, could have stayed here. But we did check this out on our bike and liked it. If we come back this way again, we will stay here instead of where we are at Brunswick.

Camped here ages ago as a kid in the family RV. Jeckyll Island has been a destination for our bunch for years — both camping and in hotels. The campground itself is a bit straightforward, but there’s a lot of cool natural and historical stuff to see within an easy ride/drive. Thanks for sharing!

I am so happy to have found your blog. We are completely new to RVing and the map you just published is so helpful I can’t even believe it! We bought a used rig a month ago and will set off for about two weeks in Florida after Christmas. After that, our plans are loose. Thanks so much for all this information.

Very happy you “found” me and you’re enjoying the blog. Good travels to you and perhaps we’ll meet down the road.
