RV Park Review – Likely Place Golf & RV Resort, Likely, CA

May 9, 2014 by libertatemamo 17 Comments

A fine drive on a fine day at the Third Tee in Likely Place Golf & RV
A fine drive on a fine day at the 3rd Tee in Likely Place Golf & RV

A huge & lush park with golf, geocaching & hiking in a rather un-likely place along Hwy 395 in NE California 🙂

NOTE/ Review Updated as of last stay April, 2015

Link to park here: Likely Place Golf & RV Resort, Likely, CA
Link to map location here: Likely Place Golf & RV Resort, Likely, CA

  1. Site quality = 3.5/5
Kind of mixed site quality here, but with the bonus of lots of green. The sites are pretty “rustic” -> all are basic gravel either pull-through or back-in with either full hookup (50Amp/water/sewer) or electric/water.  Very decent separation with generous slices of grass, trees and picnic tables at most sites. Quite nice views of surrounding meadows and bits of the golf course. Where you see variation is in size and levelness. Pull-throughs are all quite large (easily space for any-sized rig), but back-ins vary alot in size (length in particular) and many are quite uneven (we required levelers in our spot #15). Also there was slightly low water pressure. There are 3 main camping areas stacked one above the other along a hill-side:

    1. Top Tier -> Sites 21-50. These are the closest to the club-house and all pretty level. There is a mix of large pull-throughs and back-ins with FHU or electric/water only. Very decent green & separation here. The two pull-throughs with lake views (#49/50) were our fav picks, but all are quite nice. BBQ pits & green areas scattered around.
    2. Middle Tier -> Sites 1-10. These are all FHU pull-throughs. No real green/separation here plus some of sites were rather uneven so these were our least favorite. However pull-throughs are very long. The toilet & laundromat facilities are on this level too.
    3. Bottom Tier -> Sites 11-20. These are all FHU back-ins with views to a large meadow and probably the quietest of the lot. However there’s the most variation of size & levelness here, plus sites may get moist/softer in really wet weather. Good green & trees here.
  2. Facilities = 4/5
Very decent albeit just a tad dated bathrooms. Superbly clean flush toilets and good-sized shower stalls with separate bench. Only ding is that shower heads were a tad old-fashioned with slightly low water pressure.
  3. Amenities = 5/5
The amenities are what make this park special. There is a full and extremely pretty 18-hole golf-course (lakes, rivers, trees. mountain views you-name-it!), three private geocaching courses (ask at the check-in for the coordinates) and lovely hiking trails (over 6 miles) around the course. The clubhouse is quaint and offers meals & drinks plus there are 3 BBQ areas in the campground (one covered). Lots and lots of green meadows & views. Nice clean laundromats (2 machines, $1.25 per load) with cute little book-swap plus on-site dump station. Also on-site WiFi, although it is only so-so.
  4. Location = 3.5/5
You’re somewhat out in the boonies with this park. Likely, CA is a small town surrounded by miles of cow pasture. Nearby Alturas is cute and has basic shopping, but there is nothing else out here. Come for the golf course, the green trails & the outdoors…just don’t expect any high-scale dining or shopping nearby.
  5. Pet friendliness = 5/5
Absolutely excellent spot for doggie. All the trails and the golf-course itself are completely paw-friendly. Tons of space to play in the site plus walk/hike/golf with pooch around the resort. Lots more nearby hiking in national forest if you want to get off-site (but honestly there’s enough space to keep you busy here).

Overall rating = 4.25
BONUS ALERT:
18 holes of paw-friendly golf in gorgeous, lush, green surroundings with views of the mountains to boot!

Summary: This is one of those “hidden secrets” that we love to find. Likely is a small town in the middle of cow pastures in the middle of no-where in NE CA so it’s a total surprise when you drive down the few miles to get to this park and discover a lush, green park. It’s huge (immense) with a full-featured 18-hole golf course set amongst miles of hiking trails, lakes and rivers. There’s even three private geocaching courses on-site. If you didn’t know you were in a private park you’d think this was a massive state park. It has the same, relaxed feel  just with all the extras (full hookups, clubhouse, laundromat etc.). The only ding is that the sites are not exactly resort-level. I’d call them “rustic” at best -> all are basic gravel pads (either back-in or pull-through) with quite a bit of uneveness (we required levelers at our site) depending on where you park. Also there is no on-site WiFi. However these deficiencies are easily made up for by lots of green, tress and pleasant surroundings. Also the entire area (including the golf course) is dog-friendly…a huge plus for us! The clubhouse is cute and offers meals & drinks plus the hosts were incredibly friendly & helpful. Overall this place just has a great atmosphere. We totally enjoyed our stay here and could easily see coming back for a week or more to explore more of the hiking areas & immerse ourselves in daily golf. We give it a 5-star WheelingIt paws and thumbs up!

Extra Info: Good Verizon signal (4 bars of LTE), but only very iffy ATT (flickering 1 bar). On-site WiFi, but it is only so-so. Sites cost $34/night ($200/week) for FHU, $28/day for water/electric. Total 50 sites.  Good Sam’s/AAA discounts. Golf costs $23 for 9 holes, $28 for 18 holes, and the park also offers golf packages. On-site laundromat and dump.

Side-view of our site in bottom level (we were in #15). Lots of green & privacy here, but site was rather unlevel & we needed leveling blocks.

Nice review Nina. It’s always nice to know that there are great rv parks in beautiful out of the way places.

Do you level with jacks or airbags? Curiosity question!

We use Lynx blocks under the wheels, place wood under the jacks and then we do final leveling with the jacks. If you want to see what this looks like I have pics and more details here:

      P.S. Our rig doesn’t have air-leveling…only jacks.

We do actually have a particular goal up here…to be revealed 🙂 It’ll be worth the sock-in-flop look that I’m sporting at the moment.

I’m not a golfer either, but totally enjoyed walking the course with hubby and doggie. I did a few of the geocaching courses too. Very pretty walks.

Tho I’m not a golfer, this seems like a fun and quaint place to spend a little time to lay back and enjoy the scenery. Nice find.

It’s a set of hidden treasures that you find using GPS coordinates. I’ve got more info on geocaching here:

I’m one of the owners of Likely Place and we do have free Wi-fi but the park is large – 520 acres – and it’s hard to get good Wi-fi coverage over that big an area so it’s sometimes spotty. If all else fails, come to the clubhouse and log on there. We’re pleased you enjoyed our park and welcome you back.
